Introduction
NanoHive@Home is a distributed computing system used for large-scale nanotech systems simulation and analysis that draws its computing power from otherwise idle computers sitting in people's homes. Users download and install a special client program onto their computer. When the computer's screensaver comes on, the client program requests some work from a NanoHive@Home server, calculates it with the NanoHive-1 simulator, then sends the results back to the server.
The goal of NanoHive@Home is to perform large-scale nanosystems simulation and analysis that is otherwise too intensive to be calculated via normal means, and thereby enable further scientific study in the field of nanotechnology.
Here are some key points about NanoHive@Home with links to more detailed explanations:
- Completely open-source and free (as in beer)
- Not-for-profit, and with all results made available to the public domain, free and clear
- Benefits humanity by advancing our knowledge and understanding of nanotechnology
- Calculations are performed with state-of-the-art simulation software making the most use of your donated computing power
- Attention to security and safety so that you can run our software without worrying that it will damage your computer
- Interesting and interactive graphics and screensaver that shows more of the simulation results as they become available
- Uses the popular Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) platform so you can contribute via a familiar interface

Learn More About the Tooltip Failure Mode Search Project | "The project all sounds well and good on paper, but doesn't mean anything without YOU (well, specifically, your computer(s), but no one will make that distinction in 10 years). Accordingly, there's no reason why you shouldn't have a broad and substantive understanding of what it is your machine is doing as related to this Q-SMAKAS project. Every good project deserves a good explanation, so I'm going to attempt a thorough, albeit lighthearted, overview of this Q-SMAKAS project in 5 sections and hold myself to several hundred words a section (with the option to expand on contents with your (the reader's) further interest)." Project Status
9/27/2007 We're currently analyzing the results of the Tooltip Failure Mode Search Project and are working on its associated publication. We're also planning our next project which will have to do with Structural DNA Nanotechnology. This post describes a little more about it. There will be no work until we start the next project and we'll send out emails as we get close to starting it.
Account creation is turned off due to recent spam attempts. You can sign up for next project notifications via the Mailing List.

The NanoHive@Home Tooltip Failure Mode Search Project is coming to a successful end and the results are being organized, analyzed, and prepared for presentation in the Results Gallery, and for peer-reviewed publication. Notice will be sent when the Results Gallery is complete, and when the publication(s) are made. The next NHAH project is currently in planning stages and notice will be sent once it's been decided on, and as the project start approaches.
February 17, 2007
We've uploaded a new client application to NanoHive@Home (NHAH) - NHAH_QSMAKAS version 5.06. This version fixes the bug that popped up an error dialog which blocked the BOINC Manager until the dialog was closed. The progress calculation has also been adjusted so that WUs won't reach, and stay at 99.99% complete for hours. We've also reset everybody's maximum results per day to 50.
We recommend currently active participants to Reset the project once their current WU completes to get the new client application. If you've Suspended NHAH because of the error dialog pop-up bug, please Reset then Resume the project.
February 11, 2007
NHAH will be down for around 2 hours for maintenance on February 12 at 5:00 AM UTC.
